The City Hall of Milan , the financial and fashion capital of Italy, confirmed this Sunday (15) that it will ban from January 1, 2025 the smoking in public places when there are other people less than 10 meters away.
The measure is part of the “Air and Climate Plan” already in force in the Lombard metropolis and which seeks to halve CO2 emissions, one of the gases causing the climate crisis on the planet, by 2050.
In 2021, Milan City Council had already banned cigarettes at public transport stops, parks and sports arenas, as part of the same plan.
Anyone who fails to respect the ban on smoking less than 10 meters away from other people will be subject to fines of between 40 and 240 euros (from R$252 to R$1,5).
Milan is one of the cities with the worst air quality indices in Italy, a topic that gained momentum during the Covid-19 pandemic, with suspicions that air pollution may have contributed to the high mortality rate in the Lombardy region.
