Deputy Giorgia Meloni, winner of this Sunday's (25) parliamentary elections in Italy, stated that citizens gave a “clear indication” with the result of the election and promised to govern to “unite” the country.
“The data is not yet definitive, but, based on what emerges from the first projections, it can be said that the Italians have given a clear indication. And the clear indication is for a center-right government led by Brothers of Italy [FdI, his party],” Meloni said in a speech to supporters in Rome.
Both exit polls and projections indicate that the conservative coalition will have a large majority in the Chamber and Senate and that the FdI will be the party with the most votes within this alliance, which also includes Matteo Salvini's League and Força Itália. (FI), from Silvio Berlusconi.
When lamenting the record abstention of voters – almost 40% of people with the right to vote did not go to the polls –, the deputy stated that one of her goals is “to make citizens believe in institutions again”. “Our main objective is to rebuild the relationship between the State and citizens. We are free citizens, we are not subjects, and it is important to rebuild that relationship,” she said.
“We will need to demonstrate our value”, added the deputy, ending her speech with a quote from Saint Francis of Assisi.
“You start doing what you can and then discover that you have achieved the impossible,” he concluded.
