How can you say no to a classic pasta dish with tomato sauce? In Italy, the world's largest consumer of pasta, in Tomato Sauce is taken so seriously that there is even a ranking to evaluate which is the best.
Of course, sauce made with fresh tomatoes is another story, but in the rush of everyday life, a ready-made quality tomato sauce is a lifesaver, especially when the fridge is empty.
But not all options tomato puree (tomato sauce, in Italian) available on supermarket shelves have a respectable quality.
Therefore, the Altroconsumo - Italian Consumer Protection Association – decide to test 23 brands to help consumers make the right choice.
The best Italian tomato sauce comes from Emilia-Romagna
The "Keep your daughter“, from Emilia-Romagna, is the best Italian tomato sauce, according to the ranking. It received a grade of 77, that is, of excellent quality.
In second place comes “De Rica”, with 76 points. Also of great quality.
Star, Divella e Mutti and De Cecco have intermediate quality, that is, in the good category.
Surprise for the famous Petti brand, which was at the bottom of the table. With 54 points she only achieved the average grade.
How the test was done
23 of the main brands of in Tomato Sauce present in traditional supermarkets and popular markets in Italy.
The degree of hygiene, quality, organoleptic characteristics (color, texture, flavor) and the integrity of Labels.
Laboratory analysis
The research aimed to confirm the Quality e Safety of a food product present in almost every Italian home. See what was analyzed:
- Quality of the raw material, mainly in relation to the total sugar content (which gives an indication of the degree of ripeness of the tomatoes used to produce tomato sauce);
- Salt quantification, for which the rule applies: the less there is, the better;
- Verification of the presence of any adding water, prohibited by law;
- Research not only molds, one of the main factors of alteration, but also of its toxins;
- Verification of cleaning of the product through the dirt test which allows the identification of any solid impurities (for example insect fragments);
- Search of pesticides, or substances used in agriculture for the care of plants, for which only some maximum residues in the finished product are tolerated.
