Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said last Thursday (30) that the investigation opened by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office against her could cause damage to the country.

The Italian head of government was targeted by the Public Prosecutor's Office due to the controversial release and deportation of Commander Osama Almasri Njeem, the target of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Libya.

“What is happening is damaging to the country and its opportunities, it drives me crazy. To the Italians, I say: as long as you are here, I will be here too. I do not intend to give an inch, as long as the Italians are with me,” the prime minister said at an event organized by journalist Nicola Porro in Milan.

Meloni added that anyone else in his shoes would also be disheartened by the episode.

“Anyone in my shoes would be a little disheartened to come across this story. The action was clearly intentional,” the politician said.

The investigation was announced by Meloni herself, who, in a video on social media, said she had received a “warranty notice”, that is, a notification about the opening of an investigation, from prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi.

The suspicions are of favoritism and embezzlement, according to the prime minister, and the investigation also targets the ministers of Justice, Carlo Nordio, who did not request that Almasri be kept in prison, and of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, responsible for the deportation order, as well as the undersecretary of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano.
