Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini expressed solidarity with the former president Jair Bolsonaro, convicted by the First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for a coup d'état and four other crimes.

On social media, Salvini stated that "when it runs out of arguments, the left uses any means to attack political opponents, starting with the judiciary." In the same message, published on X, he called Bolsonaro a "friend" and added: "They won't stop you. Go, President!".

Previous statements

In July, after the Supreme Court imposed precautionary measures, such as the use of an electronic ankle bracelet, the vice prime minister had already come out in defense of the former president. At the time, he said that Bolsonaro was "persecuted by the left-wing judiciary, but loved by his people".

Conviction in the Supreme Court

Bolsonaro was found guilty of the crimes of coup d'état, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, participation in an armed criminal organization, qualified damage to federal property, and deterioration of listed heritage.
