Drink prepared with fruit syrup and carbonated water is an Italian-American invention
Italian soda: sparkling water and fruit syrup. A delicious refreshment that has been winning over connoisseurs all over the world. But after all, is Italian soda really Italian? No and yes.
Despite its name, this colorful and refreshing drink was invented on American soil by Italian immigrants. It got its name because the drink was made with fruit syrup, which at the time was imported exclusively from Italy.
The story goes that two Tuscan immigrants from Luca – Rinaldo and Ezilda Torre – created the drink to alleviate the strong heat of the city of San Francisco, California.
As it was a low-cost drink, which had a very simple preparation method and could be made with the most varied flavors, in 1925 it began to be industrialized and became known as “Italian soda”.

Watermelon Italian Soda

2 cups of watermelon cut into cubes
Ice cubes
1 bottle of sparkling water (cold)
Blend the watermelon in a blender and strain. Divide the juice into two very large glasses and add ice cubes. Top up with sparkling water and serve with a straw.
Passion fruit Italian soda

200 ml carbonated water
50 ml of concentrated juice
1 tablespoon of sugar
Ice cubes
Add the concentrated juice with the sugar and mix well. Place some ice cubes in a tall glass, add the concentrated juice and sugar mixture. Top up with sparkling water and serve with a straw.
Green apple and lemon Italian soda

2 cups of water
2 cups of sugar
4 green apples
1 cup green lemon juice
Ice cubes
Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan and heat over low heat until the sugar melts. Let it cool and place in a glass jar along with the lemon juice and the apples cut into very thin slices, without seeds and skin, for 2 to 3 days, until the apple gives flavor to the liquid. Then, place 3 tablespoons of the syrup in a glass, fill with ice and sparkling water. Note: the syrup lasts for about 1 month in the refrigerator.
Alcoholic Italian soda
1 dose of fruit syrup (of good quality) or liqueur – flavor of your choice
1 shot of vodka or sake
Sparkling Water
Ice cubes
Fill a tall glass with ice, add the chosen syrup or liqueur, add vodka or sake. Top up with sparkling water and serve with a straw.
