According to Istat (Italian National Institute of Statistics) the foreign population present in the Calabria region is officially 93.257 individuals, representing 1,9% of the resident population in Italy. The data refer to the year 2021, but were released last Tuesday (19) by the official Italian body.
More than 80% of foreign citizens reside in the three provinces of Cosenza (34,6%), Reggio Calabria (31,1%) and Catanzaro (17,9%). This percentage in relation to the total resident population is lower than the national average (5,0% versus 8,5%).
The highest provincial incidence is observed in Reggio Calabria (5,5%), while the lowest is in Vibo Valentia (4,4%).
Approximately half (50,5%) of foreign citizens residing in Calabria come from Europe, 28,2% from Africa, 18,5% from Asia and 2,7% from the Americas.
The presence of Oceania and stateless people is residual. Foreign citizens come from 157 countries around the world, with emphasis on Romania (28,4%), Morocco (16,1%) and Ukraine (5,8%).
Calabria: Population aging and challenges in the job market
Calabria is facing a growing aging population, a decline in the workforce and a structural demographic crisis.
According to Istat, over the last ten years, the workforce in Calabria has decreased by 75 thousand people, totaling almost 700 thousand people by December 2021, which represents a drop of 9,8% compared to 2011.
This decline in people active in the labor market is attributed to the decrease in those looking for a job (55 thousand fewer people, -37,1%), especially among women (-38,3%), and employees (-3,2 .14%), mainly among men (around 3,6 thousand fewer, -XNUMX%).
Furthermore, 348 thousand people receive pensions from work or capital income (-10,7% compared to 2011), while 223 thousand people are dedicated to domestic activities (+8,2%) and 145 thousand are students (-9,0 .XNUMX%).
Indicators related to the labor market in Calabria present different values compared to the national average. In 2021, the employment rate was 36,8%, nine percentage points below the national average, with a lower percentage of women employed (28,6% versus 37,9% in Italy) and foreigners employed (37,7. 53,5% against XNUMX% in Italy).
6,4% of the population is illiterate
According to Istat's permanent census, 6,4% of the population residing in Calabria as of December 31, 2021 is illiterate or literate without a degree, compared to 4,1% of the national average. Furthermore, 15,9% have primary education, 27,9% have a high school diploma, 35,1% have a high school diploma or professional qualification, and 14,8% have an academic degree. The lowest level of education (illiterate at secondary level) represents just over half of the resident population.
The region has a predominance of women in possession of university degrees (56,9% of graduates or those with higher degrees), mainly among women aged between 25 and 64 years.
