The Italian Association Movement Abroad (MAIE) has expanded its mobilization – in the final stretch – against Decree Law 36 / 2025, which is on the agenda in the Italian Senate this week. The proposal limits the recognition of Italian citizenship only until the second generation of descendants.
Between April 29 and May 3, letters of protest were delivered to Italian diplomatic offices in 21 cities in 15 countries in North, Central and South America. The action was coordinated by MAIE leaders, with a strong presence from local Italian communities.
The letter is signed by the senators Mario Borghese, Ricardo Merlo and Vincenzo Odoguardi. In the text, the signatories call for the “immediate withdrawal” of the decree, arguing that the measure represents “an attack on the transmission of cultural and legal identity” and threatens “the principle of unity among Italians inside and outside the country”.
In places like Chicago and Mexico City, MAIE coordinators managed to hold direct meetings with diplomatic authorities, including consuls and ambassadors, giving the act more institutional weight.
The initiative took place in cities such as New York, Miami, Toronto, Montreal, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, São Paulo, Asunción, Santiago, Caracas and Lima.

According to MAIE, if the Italian government continues to ignore the appeals of communities abroad, the movement promises to intensify its actions.
“A Italian citizenship “It is not a concession: it is a right. And those who live outside Italy, but carry it in their hearts, cannot be excluded from the future of the country”, says the note released by MAIE.
