Ricardo Merlo, president of MAIE (Associative Movement Italiani all'Estero)He refined his speech and clarified that, if approved, the requirement for the Italian proficiency test, level B1, foreseen in the new citizenship reform project presented by his parliamentarians, will only apply to great-grandchildren and subsequent generations born after the new law comes into effect.
“The new citizenship law we are presenting stipulates that the children and grandchildren of any Italian citizen, whether born in Italy or abroad, will automatically have the right to acquire citizenship. Great-grandchildren and younger children will need to have Italian citizenship at level B1,” said Merlo. He then emphasized: "The B1 category is for those born after the approval of this law.", he said in a video posted on your Instagram profile.

The bill was officially introduced on November 19th.in Rome. The text was filed by Congressman Franco Tirelli and will be taken to the Senate by Mario Borghese. Both are the only parliamentarians elected by MAIE.
The proposal suggests changes to the rules for transmitting citizenship by right of blood. Among the main points are the automatic recognition of citizenship for children and grandchildren of Italians, regardless of their place of birth, and the requirement of the B1 certificate only for great-grandchildren and future generations born after the eventual approval of the rule.
MAIE is betting on political maneuvering to advance the bill in Parliament, especially after the Constitutional Court's decision on the validity of the current legislation.
