Luca, Disney's new animation is set to premiere on June 18, 2021. The animation is set along the Ligurian coast of Italy.

Produced by Pixar studios, the film tells the story of the boy Luca, who has a new best friend, a friendly sea monster.

The fact that the friendship is with an animal, which is not normally found in homes, will set the tone for the encounters and disagreements in the film.

“This is a very personal story for me, not only because it is set on the Italian Riviera, where I grew up, but because the heart of the film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships usually define who we want to be and it is these bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca”, said director Enrico Casarosa, who also directed the short film La Luna, one of the animations nominated for an Oscar in 2012.

Still in the statement, Casarosa further contextualized the work. “So, in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian coast, our film will show an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”
