Se Laura Pausini is a success in Brazil, the credit goes to Hebe Camargo, says the singer herself. Her first trip to the country was to participate in the presenter's program. Since then, Laura has maintained a passion for Brazil and even learned to speak Portuguese.
In an interview with Estadão about his new single, BYE/BYE, which has her and Sam Smith among the composers, the Italian detailed the relationship she had — and still has — with Hebe. The presenter died in 2012, aged 83, two days after signing a contract that would mark his return to SBT.
“Hebe was everything to my career in Brazil. Before my own record company told me to travel to Brazil, Hebe discovered me,” described Laura Pausini. According to the singer, Hebe met her during a trip to Italy and, there, fell in love with her song. La Solitude.
“She bought some CDs in a store in Milan and then used my music during her program. When my record company told me all this, I traveled to Brazil for the first time,” he says. “Obviously, the first trip was only for Hebe.”
Laura says that Hebe started saying that she was her “little mother in Brazil”. On the day she traveled to the presenter’s program, she met her “brother”, Marcello Camargo. She says that she still keeps in touch with him.
The Italian singer also reveals that she received many gifts from Hebe. Among them are a pair of shoes (they both wore the same size), a dress and a scarf. “I have a place at home where I keep everything. She always lives with me. In my thoughts, above all,” she says.
Laura Pausini launched BYE/BYE this Friday, 27th. The single won a version in Italian and another in Spanish. When Estadão, the singer described that the inspiration for the lyrics came from the end of a friendship.
