The Tuscany Region will hold this Friday, September 5th, the Journey of the Tuscans in the World, at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga. The annual meeting brings together representatives of the Tuscan diaspora, regional authorities, researchers, and cultural leaders to discuss immigration policies, identity, and citizenship.
The city of Barga, in the province of Lucca, is integrated into the Scottish Festival, which celebrates the historical ties with the Tuscan community in Scotland. Thousands of descendants preserve traditions inherited from their homeland, maintaining ties to Tuscany.
Panels address associations, culture and citizenship
The day's program is geared toward emigrants and their descendants, focusing on the results of the current legislature and future challenges. The event opens with greetings from the mayor of Barga and the participation of the region's president, Eugenio Giani.
The first panel, entitled “Tuscan Associations in the World: Between Continuity and Innovation”, brings together representatives from institutions in South America, including Brazil, Australia, and South Africa, as well as the president of the Lucchesi nel Mondo Association. The debate proposes paths and proposals for the next legislative term.
Then, the second panel deals with the initiatives supported by Tuscany in 2025 under the theme “between culture, roots and shared development”. University professors, museum directors and representatives of municipal consortia participate.
Recent migrations and reform in focus
In the afternoon, the third panel discusses the new Tuscan migrations, highlighting flows related to student and professional mobility. The panel will feature sociologists, migrant support foundations, and alumni networks in Benelux countries. (Be (Belgium), Ne (Nederland, which is what the Netherlands is called in Dutch) and Luxury (Luxembourg).
The event ends with the fourth panel, dedicated to reform of Italian citizenshipThe topic is addressed from a legal and political perspective, focusing on the rights of Tuscans living abroad and common strategies in light of ongoing legislative changes.
