Praça Cidade de Milão, in the west zone of São Paulo, will host this Saturday, May 3, at 10 am, another demonstration against the Italian government's decree-law that restricts the right to citizenship by descent.
The event will be organized by the Italian-Brazilian community, in the Ibirapuera neighborhood, and should bring together hundreds of people opposed to the new rule, already in force, which limits the transmission of the right known as the right of blood — Latin expression meaning “right of blood”.
The new rule was approved on March 28 and needs final approval from the Italian Parliament by the end of May to become definitive. The proposal restricts the automatic recognition of Italian citizenship only to descendants with a father or grandfather born in Italy. Ongoing processes will not be affected.
According to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, the measure aims to curb the high number of applications from South America in recent years. However, it allows recognition for those who have one Italian citizen parent who has resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years before the birth or adoption of the child.
Last Saturday, April 26th, hundreds of people participated in the protest in the same place. Representatives of the Italian community were present, such as deputy Fabio Porta and councilor Daniel Taddone, from Consiglio Generale degli Italiani all'Estero (CGIE).
“All over the world, Italians abroad are protesting against the Meloni government. We are not opportunists or criminals. We are Italians. For an open and inclusive Italy. For a citizenship law that is fair to emigrants and immigrants. Against demographic recession and depopulation,” said Fabio Porta.
The mobilization, which will also take place in Roma, Reggio Calabria and Porto Alegre, on the same day, reflects fears that the decree will exclude millions of people with legitimate ties to Italy.
