Foreigners acquiring Italian citizenship are on the rise

On December 31st of last year, Italy had 194 different nationalities on its territory, of which almost 50 had at least 10 thousand residents.

The data are from the Istat (National Institute of Statistics) and available in the 2019 demographic sense.

According to the organization, the ranking of the top five citizenships has remained stable over the last few years, with Romanians (1 million and 208 thousand), Albanians (441 thousand), Moroccans (432 thousand), Chinese (305 thousand) and Ukrainians (240 thousand ) – which represent almost 50% of the total number of foreigners residing in Italy.

Furthermore, after the decline recorded in the previous two years, in 2019 the number of Italian citizens due to acquiring citizenship increased: just over 127 thousand, 13% more than in 2018.

Demographic decline

Since 2015, overall, “new Italian citizens” have surpassed the 766 mark, slightly less than the loss of the Italian population in the same years.

Without this contribution, the drop in the number of Italians would be around 1 million and 600 thousand.
