A Italy It is the 12th country that invests the most in defense in the world, according to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). In 2024, the country allocated US$ 35,2 billion to the sector, surpassing Israel, which came in 13th place with US$ 33,7 billion.
The increase in military spending is taking place in a context of Europe's response to international threats, especially due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Over the last ten years, the 30 European NATO countries have increased their defense spending by 50%. Germany, for example, increased its spending by 23,2% and rose to 4th place in the global ranking, with US$86 billion.
Russia, in turn, remains the third largest investor in defense, with US$ 145,9 billion. However, experts point out that, if the rate of equipment and ammunition losses continues, the country may face difficulties in sustaining offensives in 2026.
The United States tops the list, unsurprisingly, with $968 billion, or R$5,6 trillion.
Brazil appears in 17th place in the ranking, with an investment of US$ 25,6 billion. In the country, around 80% of military spending goes to paying personnel, with most going to inactives.
