Having overcome the obstacles to defining the presidents of the Chamber and the Senate, the future prime minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, wants to speed up negotiations for the formation of the new government, which is scheduled to take office this month.
“There is no time to waste, Italy needs a government that works quickly“, says Meloni insistently. One certainty seems to be Giancarlo Giorgetti, a close ally of Matteo Salvini and exponent of the ultra-right party Liga, in the Ministry of Economy.
Antonio Tajani, national coordinator of the conservative Forza Itália (FI) party, is the most sought after for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he would set a pro-European tone in command of Italian diplomacy – Tajani has already presided over the European Union Parliament.
However, Meloni does not forget the boycott of FI and its leader, Silvio Berlusconi, to the election of Ignazio La Russa as president of the Senate. The relationship between the future prime minister and the former prime minister has worsened in recent days, including accusations of “arrogance” on the part of Berlusconi.
It is believed that the FI could lose space in the future government, to the benefit of Salvini's League. The Brothers of Italy (FdI), Meloni's party, should hold the ministries of Defense (Adolfo Urso) and Economic Development (Guido Crosetto).

The League, thanks to the reinforced axis between Salvini and Meloni, can be left with six portfolios, including Economy (Giorgetti), Agriculture (Gian Marco Centinaio), Reforms (Roberto Calderoli) and Infrastructure, which would go to the former Minister of the Interior himself. “I’m available, I know what I’m capable of,” said Salvini last Friday (14).
The FI could have a similar number of ministries, but without including senators who led the boycott of La Russa. Among those listed are Anna Maria Bernini (University), Paolo Zangrillo (Health) and Alberto Barachini (Culture). (Handle)
