Italy has expressed its deepest condolences and offered assistance to Morocco following the devastating earthquake that left more than 1,3 dead in the African country.
The earthquake, measuring 7,0 on the Richter scale, shook the country, with its epicenter in Ighil, in the province of Al Haouz, south of Marrakesh. The depth of the tremor was approximately eight kilometers. The seismic event occurred at 23:11 pm, local time, last Friday (8).
Support from Italy
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani assured that Italian Civil Defense “is available to intervene” in Morocco, highlighting the organization's readiness to help in times of crisis.
The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, shared his grief over the tragedy, stating that the earthquake “awakened immense sadness” in all Italians and him personally. He conveyed his “sincere condolences to those who lost their lives.”
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, pledged support for rescue and relief efforts in Morocco.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy's foreign affairs body, reported that all 400 Italians in Morocco “are well” and that they are in contact with all of them. However, reports from Italian tourists indicate moments of concern due to the damage caused by the earthquake.
