“Disaster”. “Nightmare”. “Incredible”. Italian newspapers are searching for adjectives to describe a feeling that the country’s football has never experienced: missing out on two consecutive World Cups.
It was a real shock in Palermo. After winning Euro-2020, Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second consecutive time, being eliminated by North Macedonia (0-1).
After 1-0 defeat to Macedonia and the drop in the dispute for a place in the World Cup in Qatar, the Azzurri made melancholy headlines in the Italian press. Italy is the fourth European champion not to qualify for the next World Cup. Previously, Czechoslovakia (1976/78), Denmark (1992/94) and Greece (2004/06) went through this drama.
