Project intends to eliminate the seats of 345 parliamentarians from the current 945
Italy has approved the new date for the referendum on constitutional reform which intends to reduce the number of parliamentarians in the country.
The call will be for September 20th and 21st this year – two dates to reduce crowds.
The popular consultation was scheduled to take place in March, but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The referendum will decide on a reform that reduces the number of deputies from 630 to 400 and the number of senators from 315 to 200 (not counting the five for life).
If approved, the project – anti-system flag 5 Star Movement (M5S) – should also affect the choice of representatives of the Italian community in other countries.
The measure provides for the cut from 18 (12 deputies and six senators) to 12 (eight deputies and four senators).
Currently, South America has four deputies – including the Italian-Brazilians Fausto Longo e Luis Roberto Lorenzato – and two senators.
