Italian culture will take over Rio de Janeiro, starting this Sunday (2), with a series of activities promoted by the Italian Consulate General in partnership with the Italian National Tourism Agency (ENIT). Called Itanianorio, the event will feature sporting activities, a cultural exhibition, a fashion show, concerts and, of course, plenty of food accompanied by wine.

“With this initiative, the Consulate aims to promote and expand relations between Italy and the state of Rio, create new opportunities for collaboration and partnership, bring the community closer to its roots in Italy and, above all, promote immense regional diversity and artistic heritage, cultural and enogastronomic of our state”, said consul general Paolo Miraglia Del Giudice.

The opening of the Italiano takes place this morning at Praça Mauá, in the center of Rio, where the Italianorio Popular Race and Festival will be held. The date was chosen to coincide with Italy's National Day and the National Sports Day. The race will have more than 500 participants, while the party will be full of free activities for adults and children. See the full schedule for the day below.

Starting on Wednesday (5), the headquarters of the Consulate General of Italy, also in the center of Rio, will open its doors to the public for a series of cultural activities. One of them is the exhibition “The Italy of the Regions: Knowledge and Flavors of Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Campania and Sicily”.

The exhibition, created by the European Institute of Design of Rio de Janeiro and Coletivo CRIA, promotes a virtual journey based on photos and montages that present curiosities about aspects of art and regional classic and contemporary artists, Italian design and wine-gastronomic tourism four important regions of Italy.

The exhibition will continue until June 18th, from Monday to Friday from 12pm to 22pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 16pm. In addition to checking out the collection about the four regions of Italy, the public will also be able to enjoy live musical shows and have fun with DJ Fábio Romano's set.

There will also be a special program, parallel to the exhibition, for lovers of Italian literature. On the 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th of June, always at 18:30 pm, dramatized readings of contemporary works by Italian writers will be held. The interpreters already confirmed, so far, are the Italian-Brazilian actors João Vitti, Emilio Orciollo Netto and Nicola Siri.

Mangia che ti fa bene!

It is impossible to think about Italy without associating the country with pasta, sauces and wine. During Italianorio, the public will be able to enjoy the best of Italian cuisine and discover that each region of the country has different peculiarities at the table.

The Belvedere Terrace, located at the top of the Consulate General of Italy building, with panoramic views of Guanabara Bay, will host a kitchen specially set up for Italianorio by the pop-up restaurant Coltivi. It will be open during lunch and dinner times and dishes are priced between R$15 and R$40.

The event's special menu is inspired by the four Italian regions and was developed by Italian cook Laura Sperotto, aged 65 and with over 45 years of experience in Italian cuisine. She started working in her family's butcher shop, in Italy, and ended up transforming it, with her sister's support, into a hybrid establishment between a classic butcher shop and a rosticceria.

Alongside the matriarch, the kitchen will be led by Brazilian Chef of Japanese origin Meguru Baba, 31 years old. He has spent the last 10 years in high-end kitchens in São Paulo and was named as one of Brazil's emerging young chefs. His CV includes managing the restaurant Dalva e Dito and being sous-chef for Alex Atala at the renowned two-star Michelin DOM

In addition to the restaurant, there will also be an Italian minimarket, where the public can buy previously selected Italian products.
