Italy will intensify controls at its borders to detect the arrival of possible terrorists
Italy will step up controls against a possible terrorist attack, the measure was announced by Italian Interior Minister Lucia Lamorgese.
The operation was decided at a meeting of the National Commission for Public Order and Security (a body that includes representatives of the country's various security forces), in which the recent terrorist attacks perpetrated in France, in Nice, and in the Austrian capital, Vienna, were discussed. .
In Nice, a young Tunisian man who killed three people in a Catholic church in that French city at the end of October entered France from Italy.
At the time, the French attorney general for combating terrorism stated that the attacker had arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, in the Mediterranean Sea, in mid-September, and then traveled towards the French capital, Paris, a few weeks later.
on route
The small Italian island of Lampedusa is located on the Central Mediterranean migration route (which leaves Algeria, Tunisia and Libya towards Italy and Malta).
The Italian authorities decided to “intensify controls at border posts” among migrants arriving from the coasts of North Africa, an action that foresees “the involvement of the army”.
Regarding controls on migrants arriving on Italian shores, “imposed by essential national security requirements”, the commission evaluates the technical aspects of a future operational plan that it will coordinate together with Tunisia.
The operational plan in question aims to “increase collaboration to combat human trafficking and irregular immigration organizations”.
It is not the first time that a migrant who entered Europe, via Italy, subsequently carried out an attack in a European city.
Tunisian Anis Amri, responsible for the attack on a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016, in which 12 people were killed, arrived on the island of Lampedusa in 2011.
After the attack, Anis Amri would be killed in the Italian city of Milan (north).
