Civil Protection alarm went from “green” to “yellow”
Italy's Civil Protection Department has raised the alert level from "green" to "yellow" in the vicinity of Mount Etna, which erupted again at the end of August.
This level foresees “intense, locally dangerous or dangerous phenomena for the development of certain activities”. On August 21, when talking about the floods that killed 10 people in a park in Calabria, the head of Civil Protection, Angelo Borrelli, said that, “with a yellow alert, there is already a risk of death”.
The eruptions reach the southeast face of Mount Etna, in Sicily, and are of the “Strombolian” type, that is, of medium intensity and characterized by the ejection of ash, gases and rocks, in addition to viscous and thick lava rivers.
The cities located in the mountain area are in a state of “attention” and ready to adopt measures against possible localized emergency situations. “It is necessary to take into account that the change in the alert level may not necessarily occur sequentially or gradually, and there may be sudden variations”, says Civil Protection.
Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe and is located between the provinces of Catania and Messina.
