Why Italy might be the perfect study destination for you? Discover what it has to offer international students.
Italy has a tradition of offering courses in the areas of fashion, architecture, design and arts and, therefore, is on the agenda of Brazilian students who intend to specialize in one of them.
There are renowned undergraduate and postgraduate courses in different cities across the country, such as Rome, Florence, Milan, and Turin.
Among the universities, more than a hundred are public and only a minority are formed by private institutions. They have financial and didactic autonomy and offer different undergraduate and postgraduate courses (master's, specialization and doctorate).
Public universities are not completely free, there is an annual registration fee that varies depending on the family's income. The highest fee, for the medical course, can reach 2.000 euros.
A postgraduate course in fashion management and luxury brands at the Marangoni Institute, in Milan, costs 27 thousand euros, with accommodation in a single room in an apart hotel. The course lasts nine months and the prerequisite is to present proficiency in English (Toefl or Ielts), portfolio and translation of the higher education diploma.
The rules and documents for enrolling in different undergraduate and postgraduate courses are different. To find out the procedures, see the Italian Embassy website.
Language with fashion
The new trend in language courses is to cater to specific niches (language for architects or language with sport, or even language with gastronomy). In Italy, it is possible to take a fashionable Italian course, lasting one month, with 20 lessons per week, accommodation in a family home, single room, half board and registration fee, for around 2.700 euros, according to STB .
A traditional course, with the same services included, costs around 1.800 euros.
Italian in high school
Only Brazilians with European citizenship and an intermediate level of the language will be able to attend high school in this country. There are packages for a semester or a year. Prices start at 5.480 euros, according to STB.
All schools that participate in the program operate on an integral system, that is, classes start around 8am and end around 16pm. When the exchange student returns to Brazil, the time they spent away is validated and they continue their high school studies normally.
Traveling is part of learning
Taking short trips within the country is part of the learning process. Among the main cities are Rome (the capital), Florence, Turin, Milan, Genoa, Venice, Verona, Naples, Parma, Bologna, and Palermo.
Rome is an open-air museum, home to a series of ancient architectural monuments, as well as a valuable artistic heritage in the Vatican – an independent state, belonging to the Catholic Church and located in the center of the capital.
Further south, close to the city of Naples, Italy boasts one of the most stunning views in Europe – the Amalfi Coast. The coast, which stretches for 50 kilometers, shows the contrast between the dark blue sea, rocks and charming hotels set against the cliffs.
Florence has the Uffizzi Gallery as one of its main attractions. In the museum, you can see some of the most famous paintings and sculptures in the world.
Milan, the country's fashion hub and economic center, is also full of historical monuments. It is worth visiting the Duomo and La Scala theater.
Siena could be just one of Italy's medieval cities, but it is also a tourist center that attracts visitors from all over the world, especially during the famous horse race called the Pallium of Siena.
Verona is the largest city in the Veneto region and one of the most romantic in Italy, alongside Rome and Venice. It was the setting for William Shakespeare's famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. It has a Roman amphitheater, older than the Coliseum (Rome), where an important opera festival is held during the month of August.
Venice is dirty and crowded with tourists most months of the year. Even so, it enchants with the beauty of its canals and historical monuments. In the city center, there is the exuberant Praça São Marcos.
