Italy is the country in the European Union (EU) where the population eats most fruit daily

SAccording to data released by Eurostat, this Monday (31), the Italian population is the one that consumes the most fruit daily among the 28 countries of the European Union. According to the EU statistics office, 85% of the population consumed fruit every day in 2017 (most recent data). Portugal came in second place, with daily consumption close to 85%.

In terms of vegetable consumption, Italy is in third place with 80%. Behind only Ireland (84%) and Belgium (84%). Portugal came in fourth place, with 78% of the population consuming vegetables daily.

Conversely, the countries with the lowest fruit consumption were, in 2017, Latvia (35%), Bulgaria and Lithuania (both with 37%).

Hungary (30%), Romania (41%) and Latvia (44%) ate the least vegetables.

Across the EU, one in four people (27%) ate fruit twice a day in 2017, while 37% of the EU population ate it once a day and the remaining 36% ate it less frequently, at least once per week.

To a lesser extent, 23% of the EU population ate vegetables twice a day that year, while 40% ate vegetables once a day.
