The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Farnesina) presented, this Monday (09), new data on the volume of services provided by Italian consulates throughout 2024. According to the report, more than 1,2 million services were carried out, with emphasis on the issuance of documents and the registration of citizens abroad.

The information integrates the themes of XVIII Conference of AmbassadorsThe event, which takes place between December 14 and 18, 2025, in Rome and Milan, brings together more than 100 heads of Italian diplomatic and consular missions to discuss strategies for international action and services for Italian citizens abroad.

Passport issuance leads the demand.

Between September 2024 and September 2025In 2017, consulates issued 562.424 Italian passports. This number reinforces the importance of consular services in guaranteeing the right to international mobility and the regularization of documentation for Italian citizens living abroad or traveling through other countries.

Electronic identity is gaining ground.

The same period saw the issuance of 187.524 electronic identity cards. The digital version of the document has gained relevance. Due to its security, practicality, and compatibility with public and private systems in Europe, the service has become a priority for the consular network.

Registration with AIRE

Another relevant piece of data refers to AIRE. (Anagraph of the Italian Residenti all'Estero)Between September 2024 and September 2025, consulates processed 527.357 registration requests. Registration is mandatory for Italians residing outside Italy for more than 12 months and is essential to guarantee access to consular services, such as issuing documents, participating in elections, and repatriation in emergencies.

Italian community surpasses 7 million

According to the Farnesina (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the Italian community residing outside of Italy already exceeds 7 million people. The countries with the largest number of Italian citizens are Argentina (1.208.944), Brasil (910.587)Germany (904.440), Switzerland (693.008), United Kingdom (524.132), France (486.790) and United States (387.998).

Last week, the same agency released an infographic that indicated 918.999 Italian citizens registered at consulates in Brazil. The difference is that, in this case, the data is already updated with information from October 2025.

Conference discusses challenges and solutions.

The 18th Conference of Ambassadors aims to assess the strategic role of Italian diplomacy, with an emphasis on promoting the country's image and protecting its citizens abroad. Among the topics under discussion are consular services, the digitization of processes, and the modernization of the administrative structures of the diplomatic network.

The conference will be held in two locations: Rome, where the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Farnesina) is located, and Milan, an economic center with a strong presence of the international community.

The presentation of the data confirms the central role of consular services in Italian foreign policy, which is focused not only on diplomatic relations but also on the direct protection of the rights of Italian citizens outside the national territory.
