The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, will debate a proposal to authorize chemical castration for those convicted of sexual crimes. The measure, a long-standing banner of the conservative Lega party, led by Matteo Salvini, faces resistance from the progressive opposition, that is, from the left.
According to deputy Igor Iezzi, from Alloy, “the government will open a commission to discuss chemical castration, a measure that provides for total androgen blockade for those convicted of sexual violence.” He stated that the action seeks to reduce the reoccurrence of these crimes.
The proposal allows the convicted person to accept pharmacological and psychiatric treatments, including hormonal blockade. However, the measure is strongly criticized by the Italian left.
The Greens and Left Alliance (AVS) coalition said that “the Lega’s obsession with chemical castration is back”, and Democratic Party (PD) MP Simona Bonafè called the proposal “unconstitutional”.
There is still no forecast for the creation of a formal bill, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has not yet commented on the matter.
