Will Italy be able to contain a new wave of Covid?

Epicenter of the covid-19 pandemic in March, the Italy has managed to combat the second wave of the disease much better than several European neighbors. But How long will Italy be able to contain the second wave of coronavirus?

The contagion curve in Italy remains almost constant. There is a range of daily positives between 1500 and 2000 (in the last 24 hours there were 4.499), while in neighboring countries there are more than 10 thousand cases, with peaks of 14 to 16 thousand, per day.

But if the situation in Italy seems calm at the moment, What should we expect until Christmas?

To answer this question, the newspaper Without Newspapers heard the virologist Andrea Crisanti, who, based on Worldmeter projections, raised the alarm.

“The website, Worldmeter does not take into account any restrictive measures or new openings (as stadiums could have been), but projects three scenarios based on individual behaviors. If individual behaviors (masks, social distancing and personal hygiene) continue without worsening, by November 1st we could return to 15 thousand infections per day. We will reach 40 thousand in December. In proportion, we could count between 500 and 700 deaths every 24 hours”, explains Crisanti.

According to him, “if precautionary measures were more stringent (and, in this sense, of course, even targeted lockdowns could contribute), the number of deaths would be reduced by half”, he adds.

Government turned on warning signal

The situation is also known to the premier Giuseppe Conte.

During the Trento Economics Festival, held between September 22nd and 27th, the Italian leader said that Italy should not just “cross its fingers” and wait, but respect the rules. “Being able to control the coronavirus pandemic does not mean that we are out of it,” said Conte.

"We are not out of the pandemic, despite the fact that there are still, fortunately, few expressions of denial. We are still in a difficult condition, but reasonably, if we can respect the rules, we can control it by reducing it as quickly as possible”, urged the premier.
