The Rome Court of Appeals has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM, to decide on the extradition request for federal congresswoman Carla Zambelli (PL). The date was communicated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the case's rapporteur.
"I hereby inform Your Excellency that the next hearing regarding the extradition request for Ms. Carla Zambelli will be held on August 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM, in the Fourth Section of the Court of Appeals of Rome," declared the Ministry of Justice in a communication sent on Friday, the 8th.
What will be analyzed
The hearing will assess the legal grounds for the extradition request, based on Italian law and international treaties signed between Brazil and Italy. The IV Section of the Court of Appeal of Rome (Cutting byappeal di Rome) define whether the requirements are met and what the next procedural step will be in the case.
Status of the deputy
Zambelli has been imprisoned in Italy since July 29th, at the Rebibbia penitentiary in Rome. Her defense says it will contest the extradition, arguing, among other things, that the case in Brazil is being overseen by Moraes, who was recently targeted by the United States under the Magnitsky Act. The parliamentarian maintains her innocence, having sought refuge in the country, and alleges political persecution.
The deputy left Brazil in May, after being sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to 10 years in prison for hacking into the electronic system of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), in 2023. Zambelli has dual citizenship and is awaiting, in detention, the decision of the Italian court on the Brazilian extradition request.
