Battisti was convicted in Italy of four murders committed when he was a member of the Armed Proletariat for Communism group. He arrived in Brazil in 2004, where he was arrested three years later.

According to the report, the Supreme Court, in the past, expressed its support for Battisti's extradition in 2010, but former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva authorized his stay in the country.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Salvini in October welcomed the possibility of extradition. Battisti has lived in Brazil since 2009.
