Benito Mussolini e Antonio Gramsci are two complex and controversial figures in 20th century Italian history. They became involved in politics at a time of great social and political unrest.
However, they followed very different paths, with Mussolini becoming the leader of the Fascist Party and Gramsci becoming a theorist prominent communist, remembered for advocating different means to achieve an end similar to that of the Soviet communists.
Mussolini: the fascist
Mussolini came to power in 1922 and established a fascist dictatorship that would last until 1943. He was a fervent nationalist and a supporter of imperial expansion.
Mussolini was also deeply racist and anti-Semitic, and he played a key role in Holocaust.
Gramsci: the communist
Gramsci was one of the founders of Italian Communist Party. He was arrested by the fascist regime in 1926 and spent the next 11 years in prison. In prison, Gramsci wrote his famous Prison Notebooks, a series of essays on philosophy, politics and culture. Gramsci is considered one of the Marxist thinkers most important of the 20th century.
To fully understand Gramsci's most influential idea, one must first understand Machiavelli. O Italian thinker, where the expression “Machiavellian” came from, argued that the ruler should prioritize the acquisition and maintenance of power, even if he had to use morally reprehensible tools. Gramsci returned to this idea, but put another entity in its place: the political party.
In his writings, Gramsci develops the idea of the “collective thinker” — a group of “intellectuals” serving a cause. The idea was that, through education and especially culture, of artists, socialists should gradually recruit the minds that would make the transition to a classless regime.
Legacy
Both Mussolini and Gramsci had a profound impact on Italy and the world. Mussolini is remembered as a brutal dictator which caused immense suffering. Gramsci is remembered for advocating different means to achieve an end similar to that of Soviet communists.
What was Italy's worst export?
The answer to this question is complex and there is no easy answer. Mussolini was responsible for terrible crimes and his regime caused immense suffering.
However, Gramsci was also a controversial figure, and his ideas were used to justify the violence and oppression.
