According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, a 29-year-old American man died in a hospital in Catania, Sicily, after being struck by lightning while hiking on Mount Etna. The death occurred the night before the report was published. According to the newspaper, the victim was in a prohibited area of the volcano when he was struck.
Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe and is located on the east coast of Sicily, near Catania. Its slopes attract hikers year-round, but access to parts of the high-altitude areas is restricted or prohibited, with circulation permitted only in delimited sections and, in certain areas, with an authorized guide. Restrictions vary according to volcanic activity and weather conditions, and thunderstorms with lightning are among the risks in open and shelterless areas.
