According to the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, an investigation by the Daily Mail revealed that migrants waiting to cross the English Channel are buying life jackets at the Decathlon sports chain in the French cities of Calais and Dunkirk for €17,99 each. Reporter Sophie Carlin caught two Iraqi migrants leaving the store with dozens of life jackets packed in grey garbage bags. The two confirmed they would use the equipment to cross to the United Kingdom in small boats, but requested anonymity for fear of reprisals from the British government.
The northern coast of France, in a stretch of about 120 miles between Dunkirk and Dieppe, has been the departure point for small boats heading to Great Britain since the European migration crisis of 2015.
