According to the newspaper La Nazione, the Florence Court of Appeals has ordered the Italian Ministry of Health to pay 1,5 million euros to the husband and daughter of a woman who died in 1994 from type B non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The disease arose as a consequence of hepatitis C contracted from contaminated blood transfusions performed in 1978 at a hospital in Milan. The family is from Tuscany and initiated legal proceedings in 2013.
The legal battle went through four instances, including the Italian Supreme Court, before the final appeal was concluded. The judges recognized that, in 1993, medical science was still unaware of the link between lymphoma and hepatitis C virus infection, which prevented the statute of limitations from beginning on the date of death.
