According to the newspaper Il Tempo, the arrest of Valter Lavitola represents a turning point in the investigation into the bomb detonated in front of the home of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, presenter of the investigative reporting program Report on Rai 3. According to Judge Iole Moricca's decision, Lavitola allegedly orchestrated the attack not to harm Ranucci, but to "save" him, portraying the journalist as a martyr. Ranucci, according to the investigation, was the "unwitting" beneficiary of the act.
The director of Il Tempo, Daniele Capezzone, criticized narratives that downplay the friendship between the two. In a debate on the Rai 3 program Filorosso on August 10, he said that a journalist can have problematic sources, but living in close proximity with that source for a long time goes beyond that.
