Ferrari and Fiat should help produce lung ventilators
Scuderia Ferrari, the most famous automobile company in the world, will convert its Maranello industrial plant to produce ventilators and respirators for ICUs. The products will be delivered to hospitals fighting the coronavirus (covid-19) epidemic.
Ferrari and Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA), together with automotive components manufacturer Magneti Marelli, are working on solutions to enable the production of these life-saving devices.
Production will be carried out in partnership with Siare Engineering International, a company from Bologna, Italy, and a world leader in the production of ventilation machines.
Ferrari should help with logistics or production
Two hypotheses were presented during a meeting between a group of engineers from FCA and Ferrari that took place this Thursday (19). The first aims to optimize the production process, supporting Saire in logistics and with suppliers.
Two aspects that can boost production immediately.
However, the second hypothesis involves manufacturing parts of the devices. Ferrari has already been willing to use its systems in Maranello, and FCA is also considering which plant to use to produce some parts. A decision has not yet been made.
Although the objective is clear: to double the production of Siare's ICU device, from 150 to 300 respirators per week. In recent days, the Agnelli family – which controls FCA and Ferrari – donated 10 million euros (around R$55 million) to the Italian Civil Protection, to fight against the covid-19 outbreak.
The FCA group, Ferrari and CNH Industrial also purchased 150 respirators and masks in China and are transporting them to Italy. Furthermore, Leasys, a vehicle rental company, made a fleet of transport available to the Italian Red Cross. And the group offered its own purchasing network and consultancy service to Civil Protection to buy medical supplies and equipment abroad and quickly bring it to Italy.
