Italian-Brazilians managed to elect a representative to the Italian Parliament. The Italian living in Brazil Fábio Porta, from the Democratic Party, won one of the two seats for the Chamber of Deputies.
The Argentine lawyer Franco Tirelli, from Maie (Movimento Associativo Italiani All' Estero), with 44.468 votes will be the other deputy representing Italians in South America.
Fábio Porta, who gave up his seat in the Senate to run for a seat in the Italian Chamber, obtained 22.436 votes.
“I feel honored because this was the hardest election of my life. Very strong competition, with only two vacancies, but we managed to win and maintain our presence and voice in Parliament. That's the most important thing. We will continue to represent this beautiful Italian community in South America”, said the candidate elected to Italianismo.
According to data from Ministry of Internal Affairs, 433.636 Italian-Brazilians were eligible to vote, but only 116.209 (26,8%) participated in the election.
In the current legislature, Italian-Brazilians were represented by Luis Roberto Lorenzato (League) and (PD), in the Chamber of Deputies, and Fabio Porta (PD) in the Italian Senate.
Lorenzato (Liga) won 19.308 votes in this election and Fasto Longo withdrew from running.
Despite having been the most voted in Brazil, Renata Bueno, from USEI (Unione Sudamericana Emigrati Italiana), failed to win a seat in Italy's lower house. She obtained 25.179 votes.
Electoral Reform
The number of representatives from abroad in the Italian Parliament was reduced from 18 (12 deputies and six senators) to 12 (eight deputies and four senators).
Of this total, the South American constituency now has the right to two deputies and one senator. The three places were won by the Argentines.
Senate candidates
Emerson Fittipaldi (Liga) was the most voted Italian-Brazilian, but the 37.373 votes were insufficient to win a seat in the Senate of the Republic.
Yes, Andrea Matarazzo, who ran for a seat with the Democratic Party, won 30.535 votes.
The only vacancy in the Senate went to the current deputy Mario Alejandro Borghese, from Maie (Movimento Associativo Italiani All' Estero). He received 58.233 votes. Italian-Brazilian Luciana Laspro, from the same party, received 20.837 votes.
