Fighter bomber was developed in partnership between Italy and Brazil in the 1980s
The Brazilian Air Force inaugurated another monument with an A-1, the light attack plane Italian-Brazilian language developed in the 1980s.
The aircraft on display is one of those received in the first batch and which were not selected for modernization, according to the magazine Aero Magazine.
The memorial installed at the Santa Cruz Air Force Garrison, in Rio de Janeiro, pays homage to the small plane created with the participation of Embraer and inaugurated a new phase in the FAB, which for the first time participated in the design and construction process of a jet aircraft. .
The model is known in Europe as AM-X, an acronym for Alenia, Aermacchi and Embraer. At the time the Italian consortium was looking for an international partner for the project, which was formalized with Embraer.
However, for marketing reasons the “X” was maintained, instead of adopting the “E”, which would generate the somewhat less aggressive acronym AME.
Designed to replace the Aeritalia G.91 fighter-bombers and the F-104 Starfighter fighters, the Italian-Brazilian AM-X appeared in the late 1970s.
With the need for capital and human resources, in 1981 the Italian government signed an agreement with Brazil, allowing Embraer to participate in the project.
Considered one of the most important development programs carried out by Embraer, the Italian-Brazilian AM-X allowed Brazilian engineers access to studies and projects of high-performance jet aircraft.
Years later, the knowledge would be used in the development of the EMB-145 family of aircraft, the first jet aircraft designed in Brazil.
