A study released this Tuesday (27) by the Instituto Superior de Saúde (ISS), an agency linked to the Italian government, showed that almost 99% of Covid-19 deaths in the country since February were people who had not been vaccinated or completed the vaccination cycle.
The data began to be analyzed from February 1st because that was the date that corresponded to the five weeks necessary to complete the vaccination cycle from the start of the national immunization campaign.
In the period of analysis, until July 21st, there were 35.776 deaths confirmed by Covid-19. Of these, 98,8% were people who had not been vaccinated or had not completed the immunization cycle – two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Oxford/AstraZeneca formulas or one from Janssen.
Of the 1,2% of victims who had completed the cycle (423 people), the ISS highlights that the average age was quite high, in 88,6 years, and were people with other types of disease, which may have helped prevent the development of antibodies against the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus in a satisfactory way.
“The results presented here can have two possible explanations. The first is that very elderly patients with various pathologies may have a reduced immune response and, therefore, be susceptible to Sars-CoV-2 infection and its complications even when vaccinated. The second is that this result can be explained by the fact that priority was given to vaccination for older and vulnerable people and that it still represents the population with the highest prevalence of full-cycle vaccination when the study was carried out”, concludes the document.
