The former deputy Luis Roberto Lorenzato (League) and the Italian-Brazilian businessman Marcelo De Carvalho Fragalli filed a complaint with the Italian Public Prosecutor's Office, this Monday (5), at the Court of Roma, against diplomat Stefano Soliman.
Minister Plenipotentiary of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Soliman is the author of the technical opinion that classified the so-called “Tajani Decree” as an urgent matter.
In note to the Italian Senate, he stated that descendants of Italians abroad, especially those from Brazil, represent a threat to Italy and the European Union.
This classification allowed Giorgia Meloni's government to approve the measure without parliamentary debate, ignoring bodies such as the CGIE (General Council of Italians Abroad) and the legislative committees.
“The famous phrase that ‘there is no such thing as a perfect crime’ makes perfect sense. With this document, we have the proof and the authorship of the person responsible for the coup against all Italian citizens abroad,” wrote Lorenzato, Lega’s representative in Brazil, when the content was made public in April.
According to the complainants, the statements are xenophobic, violate the Italian Constitution and harm the dignity of millions of Italian descendants around the world.
Such statements would even have served as an ideological basis for the controversial legislative project known as “Tajani Decree”, which aims to restrict or eliminate the right to Italian citizenship by descent (ius sanguinis).
In a joint press release, Lorenzato and Fragalli declared: “We will not remain silent in the face of attacks that attempt to delegitimize the deep and legitimate ties between Italy and its descendants around the world. It is our civic duty to react to such serious statements.”
The complaint calls for the diplomat to be held accountable and warns of possible setbacks in the civil rights of people of Italian descent.
