July 10th celebrates one of the most beloved dishes in the world: Team Building. This Saturday, then, you don't even need guilt to enjoy the pasta disc, drizzled with tomato sauce and covered with a variety of ingredients, such as cheese, sausages and herbs.
The dish is recognized as an Italian invention, but there are doubts about its origin. Historical records point to the Egyptians as the true creators of dough made from flour and water.
Babylonians, Greeks and Hebrews also baked pasta, with the same type of mixture, in rustic ovens or hot bricks. However, it was the Neapolitans who were the first to add seasonings, such as basil, to the baked pasta disc, which is the version most similar to what Brazilians consume.
The round pasta, topped with tomato sauce and with a huge variation of flavors, has a special place in the hearts of Brazilians, who even created the saying: “It all ends in pizza".
It is no coincidence that the United States and Brazil lead the global ranking of the biggest pizza consumers.
Another interesting fact, this one from the Associação Pizzarias Unidas do Brasil, is that there are around 48 thousand pizzerias across the country.
Traditional flavors are the most requested. Pepperoni pizza is number one, followed by Portuguese, chicken with catupiry and margherita, according to 2020 data from United Pizzeria Association of Brazil.
