Congressman Fabio Porta (PD), elected in South America, released a statement criticizing the Italiani all'Estero Associative Movement (MAIE) for disseminating information that, according to him, distorts the content of the new law on healthcare assistance for Italians abroad, approved on the 27th by the Chamber of Deputies.
The approved text was authored by Christian Di Giuseppe (FdI), the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and was unified with a similar proposal from the Democratic Party itself. According to Porta, in a note to Italianismo, the new rule... It does not alter the current system of protection and free assistance guaranteed to those registered in AIRE.However, it offers an additional option, with a contribution, for those who wish to access the continuous and complete services of the National Health System (SSN).
“Distorted claims are serious,” Porta wrote. “They generate unwarranted concerns among our fellow citizens abroad and can lead to misinterpretations of the rule by the administration,” he said.
The congressman explained that Emergency coverage remains valid. The three months of temporary assistance and existing social security agreements are also affected. The new law only creates an optional alternative, not an obligation.
The text provides for a contribution of 2 thousand eurosHowever, the Democratic Party declared itself against this fixed amount. Porta stated that the PD advocated for diversifying the amount according to income and country of residence, as well as exemptions for students and retirees. With the rejection of the amendments, the party did not vote in favor of Article 2, which specifically addresses the economic contribution.
Porta concluded by stating that it is “false and dangerous"To say that Italians abroad will have to pay 2 euros to access public healthcare. This makes it seem like we approved a rule that changes the current situation and forces everyone to pay, which is not true," he declared.
