The deputy Federica OnoriA member of the Azione party has submitted an amendment to the Milleproroghe decree to extend the deadline for applying for Italian citizenship for minors born abroad. The proposal aims to postpone the deadline from May 31, 2026 to December 31, 2027.
The aim of the measure is to ensure that children of Italian citizens born outside of Italy before May 25, 2025, do not lose their right to recognition of citizenship. Currently, the legislation establishes a deadline that the parliamentarian considers insufficient to accommodate all interested families.
Under the current rule, children born on or after May 25, 2025, have Registration must be completed up to three years after the birth or adoption. However, for those born before this date, the current deadline applies. expires in May 2026 .
According to Onori, the recent citizenship reform brought important changes, but the government did not carry out the necessary information campaign. She states that the party receives constant reports of difficulties from Italians living abroad.
The congresswoman emphasizes that the lack of information and the short deadlines put the rights of many minors at risk.
"The recent citizenship reform introduced important new features, but the necessary information campaign never really got off the ground," said the congresswoman.
According to her, the adjustment seeks to align the legal terms with the reality of the consular network and the responsiveness of the Italian public administration.
"Without an extension, the risk is that many minors and their families will lose a right simply due to a lack of information and the objectively very short timeframes," Onori stated.
O milleproroghe It is a decree-law published annually by the Italian government to extend administrative deadlines. The text recently came into effect and is now under review in Parliament. Members of Parliament have up to 60 days to ratify the measure and include new amendments.
“We had also requested this with an agenda item accepted by the Government, which, however, does not yet seem to have produced concrete effects,” the deputy stressed.
The legislative process in the Chamber of Deputies will determine whether the amendments will be incorporated into the final text.
Onori's party acts pragmatically in opposition to Giorgia Meloni's government. Instead of systematic ideological opposition, the party is willing to engage in dialogue with the government on specific issues and vote in favor of projects it considers technically sound.
