Italy granted citizenship to 217 people during 2024. Citizenship by descent, known as ius sanguinis, accounted for 11% of the total recognitions in 2024. latest data were released by Istat, the country's national statistics institute. The number represents a slight increase compared to the 214 records counted in 2023.
Official figures indicate that the number of new citizenships remains above 200 for the third consecutive year. This level is considered the highest ever recorded in the historical series of Italian statistics.
Despite representing a smaller share of the overall volume, the jus sanguinis modality registered a growth of 31% compared to the previous year.
In 2025, the “Tajani Decree” (Law No. 74 / 2025) severely restricted Italian citizenship because jus sanguinis, limiting it to children and grandchildren of Italians, requiring that the ancestor retain exclusive citizenship.
Antonio Tajani, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, justified the restrictions based on what he considers the unsustainable growth in the number of applications and the weakening of ties with Italy.
To Daniel TaddoneAccording to a member of the General Council of Italians Abroad (CGIE), the decree was not a surprise.
"The 'Decree of Shame' was not a 'fulmine a ciel sereno'"It was, as they say in Italian, that is, it didn't suddenly appear out of nowhere. It was a well-elaborated project that began with the manipulation and distortion of facts in journalistic outlets," he stated.
Taddone also questions the narrative of an explosion in citizenship applications. According to him, "the number of applications for recognition of Italian citizenship from descendants is easily manageable; all it would take is political will and a minimum of modernization."
Numbers
Detailed figures from Istat show that residency is the main way to obtain a passport. Just over 40% of new citizens, around 85 people, obtained the document by living legally in Italy for at least 10 years.
Minors who became Italian citizens through their parents' naturalization represent almost a third of the total. The group of people born and raised in Italy with foreign parents totaled 11 grants in 2024.
The group of new citizens was led by Albanians, with 31 approvals, and Moroccans, with 27. Romanians occupy third place with 15 registrations. Approvals for Argentinians and Brazilians, however, fell by 10% during the period.
Citizenship through marriage accounted for less than 9% of the total in 2024. There were 19 grants in this modality, a reduction of 14,3% compared to 2023. Women represent 80% of citizenship cases through marriage.
The Tokyo Station area is filled with office buildings and business complexes, but it’s a fantastic choice for visitors. Why? Lombardia This region accounts for the largest volume of new citizenships, with 27% of the national total. Next are the regions of... Emilia Romagna and Lombardy, with almost 14%, and Veneto, with just under 12%. Milan and Rome are the provinces with the most registrations.

Tajani is a lying fascist who has nothing better to do. Italy has so many problems and he's using Italian citizens abroad as a smokescreen. He, the eye of Meloni and Salvini of the Diaper, who never held a job.

All four of my grandparents are Italian. What can you do in Europe when it's so much better here? I'm not interested in having Italian citizenship. My daughter has it. If they want to give free citizenship, I'll think about it. Racist, ignorant countries.
