Not all passports have the same "weight" and cost. The fees required to obtain a passport can vary considerably between countries in the European Union, even if they have similar characteristics, such as paper format, burgundy color, and state emblem.
In Italy, an Italian citizen needs to pay 116 Euros (R$ 620,00) and wait around 20 days to obtain the passport. The document is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Questura, if the person is in Italy, or at consulates around the world.
While the cost of an Italian passport is considered high compared to other European countries, there are countries that offer more affordable prices. In Spain, for example, the cost of a passport is only 30 euros, and it can even be free for large families.

In France, adults pay 86 euros, while teenagers between 15 and 17 pay just 42 euros and children up to 14 pay 17 euros.
In Germany, the cost of a passport varies depending on the age group. For children under 24, the value is 37,5 euros, but the validity is only six years. For those over 24 years old, the cost is 60 euros, valid for 10 years. The German passport for children up to 12 years old costs just 13 euros, with a maximum validity of 12 months.
In turn, the Bulgarian passport is considered the cheapest in the European Union, with costs ranging from 5 to 20 euros, depending on the age group.
Although the Italian passport is more expensive compared to the European average, it offers a validity of 10 years and a unique format with 48 pages. Furthermore, it is considered one of the most “powerful”, allowing access to 189 destinations around the world. This “force” is measured by the Henley Passport Index, which ranks passports according to their global acceptance.
It is important to highlight that the values and information mentioned refer to the year 2022, and were obtained from sources such as the Polizia di Stato and the Ministries of the European Union Countries mentioned.
