After an intense week of meetings and commitments, Domenico Fornara, Consul General of Italy in São Paulo, rolled up his sleeves and went to the kitchen to prepare his own Sunday lunch.
The dish was grilled salmon and a vegetable frittata. And to accompany it, a glass of white wine, “strictly”, he said. The photo was published on his personal Twitter page.
Fornara is right. Cooking can be beneficial for emotional well-being. According to Newport Academy, from the United States, cooking is a form of therapy that helps relieve tension and increase positive activity.
For the nutritionist Louise Lopes Weber, the ritual that involves everything from choosing the ingredients to preparing the dish is “a true therapy session for kitchen lovers”. “Getting your hands dirty relieves stress. The alchemy of flavors is good for the soul”, she emphasizes.
The psychiatrist and professor of Mental Health at the University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG), Marcelo Kimati, highlights that cooking is one of the primordial social practices that most involve affection. “Cuisine rescues a cultural, historical and family tradition. When a person repeats a recipe, they are using a cultural practice to tell a family story, integrating past, present and future in an unwritten language that includes both those who cook and those who enjoy the dish”, he analyzes.
