Death toll in Italy from coronavirus surpasses 2
The death toll from the new coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2) pandemic in Italy has reached 2.158, according to a report released this Monday (16) by the Civil Defense. This represents an increase of 349 victims in 24 hours.
In the current scenario, the coronavirus kills one person every four minutes in Italy.
The mortality rate is 7,7% in the country, exceeding the world average (3,6%).
One of the factors highlighted by experts as critical in Italy is the large number of elderly people. The main victims of the new virus are older people and those with chronic illnesses.
In total, the country recorded almost 28 thousand cases of the infection
According to a bulletin released late this Monday afternoon, the number of infections in Italy reached 27.980, including 23.073 still active cases (+2.470) and 2.749 cured patients (+414).
The growth is 13,1% more compared to the balance released last Sunday (15).
According to the head of Civil Protection, Angelo Borrelli, 1.851 people are in the intensive care unit, of which 823 are patients hospitalized in Lombardy.
The region in northern Italy remains the hardest hit in the country. In total, 1.420 victims and 14.649 infected individuals were recorded.
Neighboring Emilia-Romagna, in turn, recorded 3.522 cases of the infection, followed by the regions of Veneto (2473), Piedmont (1516), Marche (1.242), Tuscany (866), Liguria (667), Lazio (523), Campania (400), Friuli Venice Giulia (386), the provinces of Trento (378) and Bolzano (241), Puglia (230), Sicily (213), Abruzzo (176), Umbria (164), Sardinia (107), Aosta Valley (105), Calabria (89), Molise (21) and Basilicata (12).
“The data is a little detailed, some are growing a lot, others less”, explained the regional councilor for Welfare of Lombardy, Giulio Galler.
The situation in Lombardy is worrying, mainly because healthcare professionals are starting to “run out of stocks of protective masks used especially in intensive care”, said the president of the Association of Hospital Anesthesiology, Alessandro Vergallo.
