In a statement released this week, the coordinators of Forza Italy abroad declared support for the reform of Italian citizenship presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani. The proposal aims to tighten the criteria for granting the visa, prioritizing real ties with Italy.
According to the document, citizenship was being reduced to a “mere automatic inheritance” or an “opportunity to be exploited”. For the party, the decree restores “the dignity and meaning” of the right to be Italian, based not only on civil registration, but also on culture, identity and civic engagement.

Citizenship as an achievement, not an inheritance
The reform proposes “more selective and transparent criteria” with the aim of reinforcing the integrity of the system and preventing abuse. According to the coordinators, being an Italian citizen means “sharing values, actively participating in the life of the country and feeling part of a community with deep roots”.
The party criticizes opponents of the measure, accusing them of acting out of “economic interests, personal convenience or electoral logic”.
For Forza Italia, citizenship “cannot be emptied of its meaning”: it must be “a serious and conscious recognition, earned through commitment”, and not a right transmitted automatically.
“The proposal does not exclude, but rather makes people responsible. It does not close doors, but provides guidance,” the coordinators stated, reinforcing that the aim is to strengthen the bond between Italians around the world and Italy, valuing citizenship as a “point of arrival built on choices, experiences and real belonging.”
The statement ends with a thank you to Minister Antonio Tajani “for the courage and vision for the future” demonstrated in leading the reform, stating that the party “shares this vision and will support it with determination”.
Forza Italia, founded by Silvio Berlusconi, is a center-right party with limited representation outside Italy. In Brazil, Andrea Dorini acts as the party's coordinator for South America. The party has only four coordinators abroad.
