News has been awaited since January 2018 by Brazilians who need to convert their driver's license
The new model of the Brazilian Driving License will be valid in Italy from February 22nd. The information was revealed by Senator Ricardo Merlo, Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this Thursday (10).
Brazilians living in Italy have been waiting for this decision since the agreement came into force in January 2018.
Due to a failure by the Brazilian government, the new CNH model, adopted in 2017, was not covered by the resolution of the National Traffic Council (Contran), which only regulated licenses issued between 2006 and 2016.
The Brazil-Italy Agreement on Driver's License Conversion provides that nationals of one of the countries residing in the other country can request the conversion of their license without taking theoretical and practical exams, in categories A and B.
See the requirements to request conversion:
- Have definitive, valid and current licenses;
- You have a driver's license in categories A and B. To obtain different categories, specific exams provided for in the legislation of each country must be carried out;
- Be legally resident in the other country for less than 4 years from the date of request for conversion. Brazilians who have been legally resident for more than four years will have their Italian license provided with notification to take theoretical and practical exams.
- Licenses issued after obtaining legal residence cannot be converted.
The procedure is carried out directly at the responsible agency in the foreigner's country of residence ("motorizzazione" for residents in Italy and DETRAN for residents in Brazil) and does not depend on requesting documents from the Consulate.
