Italian consulates receive funding to speed up service. It will be?

With the elections approaching, the consulate in São Paulo will receive 407 euros (R$ 1,58 million) and the one in Porto Alegre, 381 euros (R$ 1,48 million). The promise is that this money will be specifically used to improve the services offered and reduce the long waiting lists for the recognition of Italian citizenship.

According to unofficial data, there are more than 112 Brazilians on the waiting list. Those registered with the Italian Consulate General in São Paulo alone exceed 70 people. The long waiting times, especially for the recognition of Italian citizenship, which can take up to 12 years, are one of the main complaints of Italian descendants living in South America.

According to Senator Fausto Longo, an Italian-Brazilian who took a seat in the Italian Senate in 2013 and is seeking re-election, the measure is a "restitution" of funds collected in 2016 and the first quarter of 2017. In 2014, the Italian state began charging a fee of 300 euros per application for citizenship recognition services. These funds, destined for the Italian government, were supposed to be 30% returned to improve consular services and consequently regularize citizenship rights for Italian descendants. However, to date, this had not been implemented by the Executive branch, although approved in the annual budget law by the Italian Chamber of Deputies and Senate.

And, in addition, they are characterized as an alternative for the market insertion of 'made in Italy' all over the world. This recognition is fair and worthy! This queue has to end!”, argued Senator Longo.

Consulates located in Argentina and Uruguay will also be provided with resources, within the scope of the same effort as parliamentarians.
