The Italian Consulate General in Rio Grande do Sul broke records for issuing passports and granting citizenship to people of Italian descent in 2024, with 14.238 and 6.464 respectively.
The consul Valerio Caruso attributed the results to investments made in recent years to improve and accelerate consular services.
“It is an extraordinary result, the fruit of the work of an exceptional team, which demonstrates the commitment and professionalism of everyone at the Consulate,” Caruso told the Rio Grande do Sul newspaper Zero Hora.
In 2024, 150 people were served per day at the consular headquarters, which recorded an average of 80 passports issued daily. The issuance of this document grew 5,4% last year compared to 2023, even though the Consulate was closed for a month. due to the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul in April and May, having resumed full public service just two months after the tragedy.
Compared to 2021, the growth is 1.081%. Furthermore, according to the consular office, approximately 4 million residents in the state would be entitled to Italian citizenship, and the recognized community has been growing by 7% annually, but the goal is to recognize another 10 citizenships in the next two years.
